Gebrüder Weiss plans to build logistics terminal in Bucharest

Top Austrian transport and logistics organisation Gebrüder Weiss (GW) today announced plans to build a 15 million Euro ecological terminal in the Romanian capital. State-of-the-art technology and time-proven Gebrüder Weiss expertise will contribute to speeding up Romania’s integration into the EU.

”We do not want to be the biggest but we want to be the best in the region and the construction of the new terminal will take us one step closer to our goal”, said GW CEO Wolfgang Niessner. ”When investing, we are always careful to bring about economically sound and ecologically sustainable solutions.”

Located convenient for traffic at the highway direction Pitesti , the new terminal is at the heart of the Western arterial road for international traffic. The new terminal in Bucharest will provide more than 8,000 m² of logistic services space, 2,600 m² cross docking area and 1,350 m² of office space. In the first extension period a 22,000 m² outdoor area space will be fixed. Currently, GW employs 67 people, has invested 2.7 million Euro for land purchase in Bucharest and has a turnover of 10.3 million Euro.

Strong Network
In the near future, GW puts a strong focus on strengthening the country-wide distribution by opening four new offices for FTL (Constanta, Cluj, Bacau, Sibiu), two new cross docking points in Bacau and Sibiu and setting up a local team for further development. ”Over the next two years, the company is to nearly double the number of employees from the current 67 to 120” explains Thomas Moser, GW Regional Manager. ”We will also purchase land in the area of Arad/Sibiu, in order to further develop the existing infrastructure. Furthermore we will move into a leased building until the new building is accomplished. This intermediate step is necessary because of the fast development in the area” continues Moser.

”The GW investments in CEEC will exceed 50 million Euros in 2008. With this investment we want to provide our customers with a range of solutions from within an integrated organisation” adds Country Manager Viorel Leca. ”By expanding our customer portfolio, placing more focus on logistics solutions and increasing the quality of service to achieve seamless organisation, we doubled our consignments to 66,000 and transported 70,500 tons throughout Europe” explains Leca.

Local growth
In 1994, Cargolog was founded in Bucharest and in 2001 GW acquired a 53% majority participation with Cargolog Romania, changing the company name to ”CargologWeiss”. Two years later, the company opened its new terminal in Bucharest and in 2005 again changed its name to become ”Gebrüder Weiss S.R.L.” In 2006, a new terminal opened in Arad, as well as a new branch office in Constanta.
